This trip may some of our guests' first visit to Ocho Rios, let alone Jamaica. Below are some suggestions in terms of things to while in the area; whether it be waterfalls, cultural sites, dining, shopping, or just a simple beach flex:
Dunn's River Falls
Jamaica abounds in rivers and waterfalls. Dunn's River Ralls is the Disneyland of them: a 600 feet mountain of waterfalls and lagoons, which cascades over wedding cake tiers of smooth rock directly onto the beach. It offers a challenging climb to the top, which can be done in levels. Be warned - it can be overrun by tourists, unless you go early. Also, don't be discouraged if you are not athletic, as it is much easier than it looks.
Dolphin Cove
Visitors can touch, play and swim with the dolphins. Reservations are necessary to participate but not if you only mean to watch. Nature hikes are also offered, and there's plenty of wildlife to see (parrots, native snakes, turtles, iguanas, shark pool, etc). A restaurant is also on-site.
James Bond Beach
James Bond Beach is about 20 minutes east of Ocho Rios, situated on Oracabessa Bay in the neighboring parish, St. Mary. Itoffers a great swimming beach and spots for picnics. Scenes from the James Bond movie "Dr. No" were filmed at the beach. The 2- story Moonraker Bar and Grill is also on-site, and may have concerts on occasion.
Reggae Beach / Bamboo Beach
Originally known as Reggae Beach, Bamboo Beach is halfway in-between James Bond Beach and Ocho Rios. This is also another good option - it was known as of the quieter, less-crowded beach in JA. It was also voted in 2010 by Readers of Lonely Planet guidebook and magazine as the Greatest Cultural Tourism Experience, ahead of Ballet at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, Salsa dancing in Havana, Opera in Italy, and authentic Blues in Chicago.
Bob Marley Birthplace and Mausoleum
In a quiet village called Nine Miles in the hills of St. Ann is the birthplace and mausoleum of the late reggae superstar, Robert Nesta Marley.
Seville Great House and Heritage Park
The site marks the area where Jamaica's first inhabitants, the Taino Indians made their largest settlement over 1500 years ago.
Coyaba Gardens
A refreshing escape; immerse yourself in the colourful beauty of this garden refuge. Explore the gardens with its vibrant hued flora, natural springs and small pools or learn about the island's history in its small museum.
Jimmy Buffet's Margaritaville
Margaritaville Ocho Rios during the day offers a fun spot to have your favorite tropical cocktail and have lunch from the grill. At night, it transforms into a night club with urban local and international music pulsing into the wee hours.
John Crow's Tavern
This sidewalk cafe/pub offers a surprisingly wide menu which includes Jamaican fare along with typical bar food such as BBQ wings. The big seller are the large flat screen TVs so you can catch your favorite sports/team in action depending on the sporting season.
Ocho Rios Jerk Centre
Ocho Rios Jerk Centre is a casual spot favored by locals, and offers pretty good traditional jerk fare (chicken, pork, seafood, etc). It also serves as a "watering hole" after work or mid-journey between Montego Bay and Kingston.
Miss T's Kitchen
Miss T’s Kitchen epitomizes “Jamaican countryside”: zinc roof, rainbow-colored tables, wood barrel chairs and, most crucially, authentic Jamaican eats. It's also situated on Main Street, Ochi’s primary tourist drag.
Shopping Plazas
There are several shopping plazas to cater to visitors, offering everything from handicrafts and souvenirs to duty-free bargains. Island Village is located along Ocho Rios Bay Beach by the cruise port. Taj Mahal is nearby with additional shopping and dining options. Lastly, the Ocho Rios Crafts Market is located in the downtown area. You can't go wrong with any of the 3, but if Omarr had to choose, there is less haggling to be found at Taj Mahal.
