I first met Christina in the fall of 2003, while we were attending Yale University. We were in a similar circle of friends on campus, but there was always something about her specifically (an X-factor, if you will) that caught my attention. I would say to myself sometimes, "Who is this girl?"
She had the movements of a strong black woman: she wore her natural hair proudly, she was on top of her coursework and extracurriculars, and she didn't take any nonsense from anyone. Yet she was fun and lively, warm and welcoming, and most importantly in my mind, humble and down to earth. I loved all those characteristics about her.
The fact that she was from Denver, Colorado, was the icing on the cake. Being a kid from Kingston, Jamaica, who migrated to Brooklyn, New York City; I knew nothing about the western side of the U.S. at that time in my life. I was captivated by Christina, and it led me to want to know more about her.

One of the traditions at Yale is a dance called the "Freshman Screw" where roommates and friends set each other up on a blind date with someone. As you can tell from the event's name, the date is supposed to be a horrible mismatch. Well, either kudos to my roommates for their foresight, or the joke's on them, because going on this date with Omarr was the beginning of something special.
The dance is not until mid-fall so we'd met by that point and when I saw him waiting at our designated meeting spot, I felt a jolt of anticipation and excitement. That night was more than 12 years ago, so my memory of it has faded into impressions of emotion. I remember it as a magical evening, filled with good times and laughter. He was also a decent dancer.
We became an official couple shortly after that, and our relationship has continued to grow through the years and experiences. Our journey together has been punctuated by actual travel: cross country by car for a summer in Oakland, California in college; trips to Jamaica, Florida, and California to see family; travels with friends including this most recent trip to Nigeria. Through it all I have come to know Omarr as one of the kindest most compassionate people I know. I feel lucky to be able to spend the rest of my life with him as his partner in crime. It's only fitting that we take one more trip to start on this chapter of our life together. :-)

We had embarked on a 10-day trip to Nigeria over the New Year's holiday break, to take part in our friend's traditional wedding ceremony. Little did Christina know, that I had plans of my own...
I proposed on the last day of the trip at Lekki Beach, on the southern coast of Lagos. I convinced one of the beach horseback riders to take us towards a secluded part of the beach, so that I could get some privacy and try to do my thing ;)
Christina had no idea of my intentions, right down to the point when I went on bended knee. I still chuckle when I recall her words: "What are you doing?!...oh my goodness..."
And the rest is history...
